NEW TRACK EXTENSION

Work on Phase 1 of our new track extension in the adjacent field to the South West of our existing site has started.
The excavation of the new track bed is progressing well. The top soil which varies in depth to between 150 mm and 600 mm is being removed down to the chalk layer. Following this tantalized edging boards are being fixed either side of the track bed. Once the edge boards are fixed we will then fill any low parts with chalk, that will be excavated from another part of the field. There will then be a weed suppressant sheet laid over the chalk and the track ballast will be placed on top of this.
We have cleared a lot of brambles and dead wood from the copse at the far end and we will keep this as a wooded area that the track will run through.
There are some mature trees on the site and the track will pass fairly close to them. So as not to disturb their roots we are going to build low level bridges across the root areas, with embankments up to them.

The excavation works to the track bed were completed before the end of 2011 and the initial layer of ballast was in place. Work is continuing on landscaping along the sides of the track. The first section of the new track was laid on 30th January.
